Sony at IBC 2005: HD for everyone (26/7/2005)

The year ahead represents a key milestone in the broadcast industry with the launch of many new High Definition (HD) broadcast services in Europe. At IBC 2005 (Main Sony stand in Hall 9, No: 9.410) Sony will be demonstrating its total HD capability of products, solutions and services designed to assist broadcasters and production companies in their HD investment decisions. Mirroring its approach to Standard-Definition (SD) production, the world's leading broadcast manufacturer has developed a number of different 1080 line HD formats to suit different applications, production types and budgets.

Under the banner "HD for everyone", Sony's latest range of products and solutions will open up a world of breathtaking creative possibilities for producers of documentaries, live entertainment, sports and drama alike. Sony HD allows programme makers to create programmes the way they really want to, whether they are a national broadcaster, a busy production company, or an up-and-coming freelancer full of new ideas. Whatever the stage of the buyer's investment decision, Sony can help with advice, support and real-life solutions.

"What's of greatest interest to customers is that we don't just offer theoretical displays presenting prototype equipment, we are already working with numerous customers across Europe, implementing real life HD broadcast and production solutions," stated Naomi Climer, Head of Media Sales for Sony Professional Solutions Europe.

One of these users, tv productioncenter zŸrich (tpc) which is Switzerland's largest audiovisual production company will be the focus of an additional part of the Sony exhibit. Just beside its stand, outside Hall 9, will be showcased the new 24-camera HD Outside Broadcast (OB) Vehicle, which demonstrates Sony's ongoing capability to provide total HD systems and services - from consultancy, design and systems integration, through to products including HDCAM, HDCAM SR and HD Switchers.

Having identified changing market dynamics with an increasing demand for HD content in Switzerland and Europe, where the major sporting and cultural events will be produced in HD, tpc decided that the time was right for it to move towards HD production. Equipped with HD cameras, vision mixers and LMD series monitors, the vehicle will be used to televise the Ski Alpine Downhill and Super-G events of 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, before a growing series of live cultural and sporting events throughout Europe.

Sony's latest technology offerings to be featured at IBC 2005 include:

* High Definition production tools which offer choice rather than compromise. From entry level line-ups through to the ultimate in picture quality, Sony will be unveiling for the first time, a number of new HD products and systems to add to its current portfolio.

* Workflow Innovation - Sony continues to bring new opportunities in workflow improvement to broadcast and production. Products include successes such as the XDCAM professional disc system camcorders and decks, through to networked production systems (SONAPS) and XPRI editing systems.

* New LCD Monitors - Sony showcases its most recent LMD series HD ready monitors and demonstrates how LCD technology can meet broadcast and professional video standards, as well having a lower cost of ownership than CRT.

In addition, a number of new products and solutions will be on display for the first time at the show in September.

HD training seminars given by Sony Training Services in the IBC Training Zone in Hall 7, will also be available, offering the opportunity to learn more about "High Definition: The technology behind the picture". Sony will also be giving an HDCAM screening as part of the IBC D-Cinema event as well as an SXRD projection demonstration which will be screening 4K material from top movies.
